Partagas Benji Master Series

Country: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Cameroon
Binder: Havana Connecticut
Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaraguan
Strength: medium-full

Master blender Benji Menendez, one of the last living links to Cuba from pre-Castro days, and the overseer of the H. Upmann factory in Havana until it was nationalized by Fidel Castro, is the driving force behind this blend. The General Cigar factory, maker of Cohiba, La Gloria Cubana and the original Partagas, initially made about 200 blends to get it right, but the result is an elegant cigar that’s easy to appreciate. It’s medium in body and has a spicy aroma, with a mild sweetness from the Cameroon leaf and a spicy follow-up from the Connecticut binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. Only 5000 boxes were produced in this limited run. A must have for the cigar aficionado.

Casa Magna Cigars

The Quesada family has been a part of the tobacco world for over 100 years. They emigrated from Spain to Cuba in the mid 1880's where they were bakers and decided to start in the tobacco business when they were paid a debt with tobacco. The Quesada brothers were forced into exile due to the Cuban Revolution where they had to leave everything behind. They moved to the Dominican Republic where they bought warehouses and established the tobacco leaf business on the island.

The Casa Magna line of cigars is a creation from two of the greatest minds in the cigar world. Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plascencia created the Casa Magna. The Robusto size in the Casa Magna line was rated a 92 in Cigar Insider, while it was voted Cigar of the Year in 2008 by Cigar Aficionado. The Casa Magna is a Nicaraguan puro which means that all the tobacco in the cigar comes from Nicaragua. The Casa Magna is a medium to full bodied cigar.  The wrapper is an oily Colorado wrapper that finishes off the cigar nicely. The Casa Magna has hints of coffee, cocoa, and sweet cedar and is a very smooth smoke.

The Quesada family has been in the tobacco industry for over a century now and their experience has brought produced some of the most consistent and sought after cigars of this century. They have created timeless classics like the Fonseca cigar lines and even the 2008 Cigar of the Year, Casa Magna. This year, Manuel Quesada is celebrating the 35th year they have been manufacturing cigars in the Dominican Republic with a new cigar bearing his last name for the first time, The Quesada 35th Anniversary cigar.

Thoroughly modern in concept and execution, the Quesada 35th is a box-pressed Toro of six inches and 49 ring gauge, adorned with a double band at the head and a special footer band to protect the wrapper against damage. The gorgeous, dark Arapiraca wrapper leaf was grown in Ecuador rather than Brazil and is combined with a Criollo ‘98-seed binder grown in the Dominican Republic and filler leaves of Vuelta Arriba-seed ligero from the Dominican and ligero from Nicaragua.

As expected from this blend, it’s a medium-to-full-bodied smoke with the edge and character one anticipates from today’s youth. It opens with a burst of spicy and peppery flavors that excite the mouth and stay far away from even a hint of bitterness. This spirit and verve continue throughout the cigar, giving it a flair that lasts into the last third.

The Quesada 35th Anniversary is being produced with a limited 1,000 boxes of 20 at a suggested retail price of $12.75 per cigar.

Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro

The Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro first reached cigar shops on September 8, the 45th anniversary of the creation of Padrón Cigars Inc. by José Orlando Padrón. The 83-year-old Cuban émigré is the embodiment of the American dream, having come to the United States in the early 1960s with nothing more than a few hundred dollars, a solid work ethic and the burning desire to make cigars that tasted as good as the ones he smoked as a young man in Cuba. The image of a hammer on this special release commemorates a most precious gift given to him by a friend when he was virtually penniless—the tool allowed him to eke out a living as a carpenter, money he saved to form a small cigar company. The cigar smokers of the world owe that benefactor a great debt, for the Padrón family continues to give us one brilliant cigar after another.

No company has dominated our ratings in the way Padrón Cigars has. This is the third time it has been named Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year, an honor that has only existed for six years. The No. 45 is stronger than typical Padróns and is an intense smoke jammed with rich, hearty, coffee notes and a heady amount of spices. The Padróns are tobacco hoarders, keeping stocks of tobacco for years, and this cigar is made with some of their oldest leaves. Company president Jorge Padrón says the leaves inside are as old as 10 years.

The first of the Padrón’s Family Reserves were torpedos made from very old tobaccos, served only for special occasion dinners and never sold at retail. While the 45 shares the original’s old tobacco, it’s a slightly different blend and an entirely different shape, being a severely pressed parejo. While the majority of Padrón Family Reserve No. 45s are made with maduro wrappers, some are wrapped in natural leaves. The cigars come in tidy boxes of 10, the cover of which bears the signature of the Padrón clan. “This is something you carry in your blood,” says José Orlando Padrón about making cigars. “I was born in the middle of all that and that is why I love it so much.”
